| Embroidery art is a very technical application of an oft-looked-over aspect of the garment industry. The above designs were originally created for entry in various embroidery competitions. The "52 Pickup" series gained First Place and an Honorable Mention in 1999 for the Full Chest and Hat Logos, respectively. "Dreamlight Carousel" captured an Honorable Mention in 2000. "Mountain Pass" won First Place in 2001. The "52 Pickup" full chest logo took over 45 hours to research and draw. All the cards had to be replicated in a vector format and adjusted for embroidery standards. The hat design was less labor-intensive, taking approximately 25 hours. The left-chest logo was an afterthought, yet it still required as much time to draw as the hat logo. "Mountain Pass" was one of those designs that just popped into my head, but took an inordinate amount of time to illustrate. The challenge was to create a design that was panoramic, then apply that concept to a hat. I still am surprised at how well it was replicated in embroidery. My nemesis was "Dreamlight Carousel". Never have I dedicated so much time to a single design. It took over a week of intensive research into carousel construction. All colors were scrutinized carefully. The background design was reworked numerous times. The idea of the rollercoaster, ferris wheel, gate and path, and the nightscape and fireworks came to me as I was drawing the carousel itself. I thought that the addition of these extra elements was an integral part of the atmosphere surrounding the carousel. They at once frame the subject and release the viewer into that magical world of the amusement park. The perspective of all of the elements is crucial to the success of this piece. I don't remember how many times I looked at various parts of the carousel thinking, "That doesn't look right." With an illustration time well over 100 hours, I can honestly say that the result was well worth the effort. |
